Juneteenth Our Freedom

Let Freedom Ring!

The rest of the US has the 4th of July, which is awesome, but Juneteenth is just for us.

Originally established in 1865 as the African American Emancipation Day, Juneteenth is celebrated in commemoration of the end of slavery in the US.Over the years, celebrations quieted due to economic and cultural influence but reemerged in the ‘50s and ‘60s.

Last year, the attention on civil rights issues once again shone a light on Juneteenth. Pharrell (yes, that Pharrell) advocated for Juneteenth to become a paid holiday in his home state, Virginia. It’s a small step, but an important one.

We encourage you to lobby to have Juneteenth recognized as a state holiday where you live. Reach out to your state and local representatives. Write letters, sign petitions, get organized!

Juneteenth isn’t just a celebration of freedom, it’s a celebration of our innovation, community, perseverance, and spirit.
